Further to our announcement earlier this year, the OHA would like to invite Old Hulmeians to the OHA Annual Dinner 2012. The dinner will be held on Saturday 2 June at William Hulme's Grammar School, Manchester.

Volunteers needed to scan material and organise the OHA Archives

The OHA is currently looking for members to help digitalise and organise the extensive archives at WHGS. These date right back to when WHGS first opened including:

Infectious Disease Book
Beatings Book
Early School Accounts
Newspaper cuttings scrap books (including the advert for the first entrance exam)
Mr "Toddy" Haynes photo archive
Plus, boxes and boxes and boxes of photos - CCF, Sports, Hardraw etc.

If you're good with digital scanning or generally want to lend a hand, please contact the OHA Committee at oha@oldhulmeians.org and get involved! Your hard work will enable the OHA to further develop it Members Area pages to allow OHA Members across the world to quickly search through the archives, share memories and explore the fascinating history of William Hulme.

A message from the President

Matthew Hargreaves was elected President of the OHA for a two-year period in September 2011. He says: "The purpose of the OHA is to encourage social interaction amongst staff and pupils both past and present. We need to look to new forms of technology to support this interaction, whilst retaining our current methods of communication. The OHA will continue to support the school financially as well as offering its resources, including the experience and expertise of our members, for the benefit of pupils and the School."

Born in 1972, Matthew attended the William Hulme's from 1982 to 1990 (Dalton House), obtained a BSc in Rivers and Rocks at Sheffield University. Involved in student houses in Sheffield, he then drifted into property in Manchester. Matthew travelled the world and then lived in Manchester city centre for a decade. Mediocrity and under-achievement followed in the field of Exhibitions. Now out in Knutsford with Holly, his wife, and two children: Monty (two years) and Florence (two weeks). Happy. No dog, no God: would quite like a dog.

OHA Annual Dinner June 2012

Our speaker is Vernon Lord at the school from 1975- 1982. Lacrosse star, a career high of being a former Treasurer of the OHA now the MD of restaurant chain 'Individual Restaurant Company' which include brands: Piccolinos, Restaurant Bar and Grill and Manchester bar Panacea.

The dinner will be held on Saturday 2 June at William Hulme's Grammar School, Manchester. Tickets and further details to be announced shortly.

Did you attend WHGS 1965 - 1975? Christopher Finn has organised a group from his year, including so far George Lord, Dave Wilkins, Rick Jeffreys, Rick Burslem, Chris Plunket and Rob Edmundson. Do you know these chaps? Then come along to the OHA Annual Dinner!

OHA Annual Dinner 2011

Our annual dinner this year was held on Saturday 25 June 2011 at school. The principal guest and speaker at the dinner was distinguished old boy Robert Hough, chairman of the North West Regional Development Agency. Robert has an outstanding track record of local service. He is currently a director (and deputy chairman) of Peel Holdings and a governor of the University of Manchester, and was previously executive chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Company, chairman and vice-president of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, a director of Manchester Business School, and also a former governor of WHGS. He is a deputy-lieutenant of Greater Manchester, and was additionally high sheriff of Greater Manchester in 2004-5 and president of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1994-5.

Help with membership drive

We would like to invite all Old Hulmeians to help us gather information regarding members of their own school year group. As the internet and email become more commonplace, we need to keep pace with these developments. What we are seeking are volunteers to act as representatives for each individual year group, to be responsible for collating email addresses and contact details within their cohort. OHA Annual Newsletter 2011

Members will have recently received a copy of the annual newsletter in the post. We hope you found it both interesting and entertaining. Already we are looking ahead to next year's edition, and we would like to put out a request to ALL former pupils (and teachers or parents/relatives) to send us any content which you feel may be of interest. The newsletter is sent to to approximately 1000 Old Hulmeians from across every generation, including some who attended the school in the 1930s and others who left within the last couple of years. We would welcome content on any relevant subject in any format, long or short, fact or fiction. Short notes telling us your news are as welcome as longer historical pieces or funny memories. The editor can be contacted via oha@oldhulmeians.org.

Business/careers mentors for WHGS

The OHA is looking to build up a database of Old Hulmeian careers advisers within different sectors (legal, medical, engineering, business etc), who would be willing to come into the school to offer guidance to sixth form students, either in a short assembly presentation or through a more informal small group discussion. Access to WHGS archives

Following a number of recent enquiries for information about former pupils, representatives from the OHA committee are working with the school to explore how we might make the WHGS archives available to OHA members.

The school has kept a wide range of documents and materials dating back many years, including the following: copies of "The Hulmeian" annual magazine and the OHA newsletter for most years; card index of pupils (names, dates, headmaster's comments) dating back many years; register of teaching staff (1890s-1960s); register of absence for infectious diseases (1890s-1950s); a large number of assorted but uncatalogued photographs, plus a small number of photographic printing plates; press clippings about the school dating back to its opening; KP Thompson's history of the school; OHA committee meeting minutes (1913-86); Whitworth House archive (1970s-1990s); various shields, blazer and cap badges from the school and CCF; entrance exam results (1887-1903).

We hope to make some of these materials available online, although this will not be suitable for all items. Anybody who would like to help with either cataloguing the archives or preparing them for digital presentation online is kindly requested to contact Matthew Hargreaves at Matthew2ts@hotmail.com.

Old Hulmeians 1914-19 war memorial website

Keith Robson (OH) has developed a website at http://oldhulmeianswarmemorial.yolasite.com to commemorate those Old Hulmeians who were killed in World War I. Our thanks go to Keith, and we would invite Old Hulmeians to contact him if they have any further information which may be of relevance to this ongoing project.

OHA London Dinner 2011

Annual General Meeting - September 2011

The AGM of the Old Hulmeians Association was held at school on 14 September 2011. We elected a new President (Matthew Hargreaves), and a new committee (well, some new faces alongside a few older ones). A couple of minor but important amendments to the constitution were also passed. A list of committee members, minutes of the meeting and a copy of the new constitution will be available on the website in due course. The committee members can be found in the 'About Us' section of this site.
